Gauley Fest Update!
…with a little Valley Falls on the side
This
was only my second trip to the Gauley River and was, by far, the best time I’ve had at any river festival I’ve
been to. My only regret is that I had to leave Sunday afternoon and couldn’t stay to paddle with Sam on Monday. I arrived
around 5am Saturday morning and got a late start paddling Saturday…I made the very poor decision to hike into Pillow
Rock to catch up with everybody. The trail was steep, not for someone carrying a boat and wearing flip-flops. Regardless,
I made down paddled Pillow a few times before heading down. The Gauley is a great river with some really fun rapids and some
great rafting.
I finally caught up with everyone at the Fest, had a few drinks,
helped with the making of the free t-shirts, signing people up for a chance at a free Smoothy, and answering any questions
about the stellar line-up Bliss-Stick has. We also a pic of the final plug of the new Big Mystic! The booth was busy, I mean
really packed, for most of the night and people wear pretty stoked on the boats we had there!
After the Smoothy give-a-way we all had a chance to chill a bit, have a few drinks and catch up on the day’s
events and what we were doing on Sunday.
On Sunday I decided to take my buddy
Jake, who has only been in a kayak 5 or 6 times to Valley Falls: a small section or 2 river wide ledges offering a variety
of drops, from slides to clean waterfalls. My good friend Justin showed us the way there, we put Jake in a Mystic, and off
of some drops we went.
